Sunday 14th September saw this year’s club championships followed by a celebration of the 60th anniversary of the founding of Whiteleaf Bowmen in 1965.
Whether it was an inclusive range of Western rounds or the promise of a special anniversary cake, there was a great turnout and the weather gods were kind, as it remained dry despite all the dire forecasts.
There is just a handful of club members now who shot at the original club ground next to what used to be The Rose and Crown in Saunderton. Despite the obvious attraction of being located next to a pub, there were some challenges with shooting alongside a busy railway line.
When The Rose and Crown asked us to leave, the future of the club looked bleak. Thankfully the owner of Stocken Farm offered us the field we now have and the club and its contents, including the original 1960s club hut moved up to the new ground. The hut was replaced in 2013 with the current building and thanks to the hard work of many club members over the years, we have a shooting ground to be proud of, which is the envy of many other clubs.
Whiteleaf Bowmen has a great tradition of welcoming all archers, whether they shoot competitively, just for fun or for the social side of things. Long may this continue for the next 60 years.
