About Us

Whiteleaf Bowmen was formed in July 1965 by 12 founder members. The club started at the field attached to the Rose and Crown pub at Saunderton in Buckinghamshire, which remained our home until May 2003, when we moved to our new location nearby.

Whiteleaf is a friendly club which includes a range of skill levels, experience, and interests, from competitive tournament archers to those who just enjoy shooting down at the club. Most members shoot either recurve or traditional longbow and many shoot both disciplines. While compound bows could not be used at the old field for safety reasons, there are no such restrictions at our new home, and we are now pleased to welcome any compound archers in the area, as members or visitors.

We hold an annual Club Championship for recurve, a separate Club Longbow Championship, and a Chairman's Shoot especially for our novice archers.

We run two tournaments each year: a Club Invitation Shoot and an Open Longbow Tournament which has proved extremely popular since its inception in 1997.

We also run beginners' courses, indoors in the spring and autumn, and outdoors in the summer. Total cost of these courses is £40 for four lessons. Our Autumn 2007 course is full, so dates for next course on which there are still places available will be February 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th 2008 - indoors at Lacey Green Village Hall, 7:30pm - 9:45pm. The club provides good quality wooden take-down bows, all other necessary equipment, and personal instruction by qualified coaches. When beginners join the club, they can borrow equipment for several weeks, so avoiding the need to immediately go out and buy their own. Contact the club Coaching Organiser if you would like to attend a beginners' course.

In addition to these activities, in the summer the club offers "Fun Shoots" for local groups such as Scouts, Round Table, & Ladies Circle, and for Corporate Team Building & Birthday parties. Club members volunteer their time to help out, and the nominal fees help to boost club funds. Contact the club Secretary if you would like to arrange a Fun Shoot.

Target Days and Shooting Times

The ground is at our sole disposal, which allows us unlimited archery 365 days a year. Official target days are Sunday, starting at 10:00am, and Wednesday evening, starting at 6:00pm, but members are free to shoot whenever they wish. The ground can accommodate up to twelve targets, and has permanently-marked distances for all the major GNAS and FITA rounds.

During the winter the club uses a local village hall for indoor shooting on most Wednesday and Thursday evenings, with sessions starting at 5:30pm and 7:30pm. Senior members contribute £1.50 per evening, which helps towards the hiring costs. Juniors shoot free. For contacts regarding shooting, click here
